Microsoft Defender for Business

Also known as: Defender for Business

Microsoft Defender for Business is Microsoft's endpoint security product for organizations with up to 300 users.

It provides next-generation antivirus, endpoint detection and response (EDR), automated investigation, and vulnerability management for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, managed from the Microsoft Defender portal. It's included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and sold separately. While it brings enterprise-grade protection to small businesses, it still needs someone to configure it and respond to alerts.

Microsoft Defender for Business, explained at three levels

At home

Defender for Business is like a security guard for every company computer and phone, watching for burglars and calling for help when something looks wrong.

At work

It protects company devices against malware and attacks, and may already be included in your Microsoft 365 plan.

Real-world examples

At home

Aisha's employer switched to Defender for Business. When she accidentally opened a malicious attachment, her laptop was isolated and cleaned automatically.

At work

Marcus's Winnipeg MSP standardized clients on Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Using Defender for Business replaced several separate antivirus subscriptions.

Built-in antivirus protects one PC. Defender for Business protects a whole company.

For analysts

Before buying security tools, I'd check what existing Microsoft 365 licences already include. Small businesses often pay twice for overlapping protection.

History & origin

Windows Defender began as an anti-spyware tool in 2006 and grew into Windows' built-in antivirus. Microsoft built enterprise endpoint protection under the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint brand, aimed at large organizations. In 2021, Microsoft announced Defender for Business for smaller organizations, making it generally available in 2022 and including it in Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Independent testing labs have generally rated Microsoft's protection well in recent years. Many MSPs manage Defender for Business through tools such as Microsoft 365 Lighthouse. In my view, for many small businesses already paying for Business Premium, Defender for Business makes separate antivirus spending hard to justify.
