DigitalOcean

Also known as: DO, DigitalOcean Droplet, DOKS

DigitalOcean is a cloud provider targeted at developers, startups, and small-to-medium businesses who find AWS and Azure overwhelming.

Its 'Droplets' (VMs) are straightforward to configure, pricing is predictable (flat monthly rates, not per-hour with dozens of variables), and the documentation is widely considered the best in the industry.

DigitalOcean, explained at three levels

At home

DigitalOcean is a simpler alternative to Amazon or Microsoft cloud hosting. You pick a server size, pay a flat monthly fee, and get a Linux server you can use for websites, personal projects, or learning. The pricing is clear: roughly $4 to $6 a month for a basic server, not a complex formula.

At work

DigitalOcean is a cloud provider that rents virtual servers, managed databases, storage, and Kubernetes with a deliberately small menu and flat monthly prices. Small businesses and development teams care because they can host web apps and internal tools with less setup than AWS and fewer billing surprises, while getting more control than shared web hosting. Its free tutorials also lower the skill needed to run things.

Real-world examples

At home

Thomas set up a $6/month DigitalOcean Droplet to run his personal website and self-hosted tools. He followed a DigitalOcean tutorial to install Nginx and configure SSL in about 30 minutes.

At work

Fatima's startup runs on DigitalOcean Managed Kubernetes with a Managed PostgreSQL database. The predictable monthly bill makes financial planning easy, and they haven't needed to hire a dedicated DevOps engineer.

Common confusions

  • DigitalOcean is only for personal projects — DigitalOcean serves production workloads for thousands of companies. Their managed services and Kubernetes offering handle serious scale. The simplicity is a feature, not a limitation.
  • DigitalOcean is cheaper than AWS for everything — DigitalOcean is often cheaper for simple VMs and managed databases. But AWS's ecosystem, enterprise support, and specialist services (AI/ML, data analytics) offer value that DigitalOcean doesn't match.

For analysts

DigitalOcean's App Platform lets analysts deploy data apps (Streamlit, Dash, Metabase) from a GitHub repo with no server configuration. Their managed PostgreSQL database is simple to connect to standard BI tools.

History & origin

DigitalOcean was founded in 2011 and became known for SSD-backed virtual machines when SSDs were still uncommon in cloud hosting. Its developer-friendly pricing ($5/month for a starter server) and outstanding documentation tutorials built a loyal following. DigitalOcean went public on the NYSE in 2021. It has expanded from simple VMs to managed Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage (Spaces), and an App Platform (PaaS) competing with Heroku.
