Video File Types (MP4, MOV, AVI)

Video files come in different formats, each with its own strengths.

MP4 is the most widely used because it works on almost every device and keeps file sizes manageable. MOV is Apple's format and is popular with video editors. AVI is an older format that usually produces larger files for the same quality. Understanding these formats helps you share, store, and play videos without compatibility issues.

Video File Types (MP4, MOV, AVI), explained at three levels

At home

Video file types are like different packaging for your videos. MP4 is the most popular because it works on nearly every phone, computer, and TV. MOV is Apple's version and works great on iPhones and Macs. AVI is an older format that produces big files. If you are not sure which to use, MP4 is almost always the safest choice.

At work

In the workplace, video format matters for training materials, presentations, and marketing content. MP4 is the standard for web uploads and email attachments because of its wide compatibility. MOV is often used in creative departments that work with Apple hardware. Teams should agree on a standard format to avoid playback issues during meetings.

Real-world examples

At home

Carlos records a video of his daughter's school play on his phone, which saves it as an MP4. When he shares it with grandparents, it plays perfectly on their Android tablet, Windows laptop, and smart TV because MP4 is universally supported.

At work

Lena works at a video production company and edits a client's promotional video using MOV files for the best editing quality. Once the final cut is approved, she exports it as an MP4 for the client's website and social media channels.

MP4 is the best all-around choice for sharing and playing videos on any device. MOV is preferred in Apple-centric editing workflows. AVI is largely outdated but still found in older archives.

For analysts

When someone asks what format to save a video in, MP4 is almost always the right answer. It plays everywhere and keeps file sizes reasonable. If you work in video editing on a Mac, you might use MOV during the editing process, but export the final version as MP4 for sharing. If you come across old AVI files, consider converting them to MP4 to save space and improve compatibility.

History & origin

AVI was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as one of the first widely used video file formats. Apple developed the MOV format around the same time for its QuickTime player. MP4, based on the MPEG-4 standard, was finalized in 2001 and quickly became the universal standard because of its efficient compression and broad device compatibility.
