Social Media & Messaging

Mention / Tag

A mention or tag is when you reference another person or account in a social media post, comment, or message, usually by typing the @ symbol followed by their username.

When you mention someone, they receive a notification and a clickable link to their profile appears in your post. Tagging can also refer to identifying someone in a photo or video. Mentions and tags are used to bring someone into a conversation, give credit, or simply let someone know you are talking about them.

Mention / Tag, explained at three levels

At home

When you type the @ symbol followed by someone's username in a post or comment, like @JaneDoe, you are mentioning them. This sends them a notification so they know you are talking about them or want their attention. Tagging someone in a photo means you are identifying them in the picture, which usually shows up on their profile and lets their friends see it too.

At work

In professional social media, mentions are used to acknowledge partners, cite sources, or engage with other brands and thought leaders. Tagging relevant accounts in a LinkedIn post or tweet can increase visibility because it introduces your content to that account's audience. Customer-facing teams monitor mentions to respond to questions, complaints, and feedback quickly.

Real-world examples

At home

Jerome posts a photo from a concert and tags his friend @AishaK in the picture so she can see it and share it on her own profile. He also writes in the caption 'Had an amazing time with @AishaK!' which sends her a notification.

At work

Lena, a PR specialist, posts on X about a successful product launch and mentions @TechReviewSite, the publication that covered the story. The publication sees the mention and reposts it, exposing the launch to their much larger audience.

Common confusions

  • One common misunderstanding is that mentioning and tagging are exactly the same thing. A mention references someone in text with @, while tagging usually means identifying someone in a photo or video.
  • It's often assumed that you can tag anyone in any photo without their knowledge. Most platforms notify the tagged person and many allow them to approve or remove the tag.
  • A frequent misconception is that mentions are private. If your post is public, the mention is visible to everyone, not just the person you mentioned.

For analysts

Mentions and tags are great for bringing people into conversations and giving credit where it is due. But be thoughtful: do not tag people in posts they would not want to be associated with, and avoid mass-mentioning people just to get attention. If someone tags you in something you are uncomfortable with, you can usually remove the tag from your profile. In professional settings, tagging relevant people and companies can meaningfully expand the reach of your content.

History & origin

The @ symbol for mentioning users originated on Twitter in the late 2000s, initially as an informal convention that the platform later built into its functionality. Facebook introduced photo tagging in 2005, allowing users to identify friends in uploaded images. The concepts of mentioning and tagging have since become standard features across virtually all social media platforms.
